Rebecca Wildbore is left penniless when her bullying husband dies. When Clifford, an old friend, offers her a job at his boys` boarding school, she jumps at the chance to make a new start. But her colleagues are hostile, the accomodation proves to be a dilapidated  cottage, and she quickly realises that, far from helping her, Clifford is hoping to exploit her in every possible way.
